Jeju’s Energy Transition Roadmap Towards Energy Independece and Carbon Neutrality
Announced on January 12, 2023
On January 12, 2023, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province unveiled its Energy Transition Roadmap to realize energy self-reliance and carbon neutrality. Building on the “Global Green Hydrogen Hub” plan announced in September 2022, Jeju is accelerating a just and inclusive transition to renewable energy.
The roadmap outlines Jeju’s vision to restructure its energy system around clean power, expand hydrogen-based power generation, and apply renewable energy across industry and daily life. It highlights six key strategies:
Public-led development and shared benefits from wind and solar power
Gradual conversion of thermal power to green hydrogen
Clean energy transition in agriculture, tourism, and industrial sectors
Hydrogen and electric mobility in transport and households
Protection for declining industries and energy-vulnerable groups
Promotion of green hydrogen industries and digital energy services
Jeju plans to establish a “Green Hydrogen Island,” supplying power entirely from renewables and green hydrogen, while enhancing public ownership, job creation, and sustainable industrial growth.
