Jeju’s Plan to Become a Global Hub for Green Hydrogen Announced on September 29, 2022
On September 29, 2022, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced its “Plan for Establishing a Global Hub for Green Hydrogen.” The strategy outlines Jeju’s vision to build a full-cycle green hydrogen ecosystem powered by renewable energy—from production and storage to distribution and utilization.
The plan aims to:
Utilize surplus wind and solar power to produce green hydrogen via electrolysis.
Deploy hydrogen mobility, including buses, trucks, trams, and ships, starting with MW-scale facilities by 2025.
Expand hydrogen refueling stations and infrastructure by 2030.
Promote local job creation, citizen participation, and industrial transition.
Strengthen Jeju’s position as a leading green hydrogen hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
This initiative builds on Jeju’s Carbon-Free Island 2030 vision and is designed to contribute to Korea’s national net-zero goals, while fostering international cooperation and sustainable energy innovation.
